The retired HMNZS Wellington (F69), a Leander Class Frigate, lives on....

Placed successfully onto the seabed at 3.25pm on the 13th Nov 2005

Minutes from Wellington International Airport, F69 is one of the most accessible divewrecks on the planet!

Thanks to all those that made Project Wellington possible and for the incredible support provided to the SinkF69 Trust.

The SinkF69 Charitable Trust was formed solely for the acquisition of the retired HMNZS Wellington (F69), a Leander class frigate, utilising the vessel to create an artificial marine reef and a world class recreational diver facility. The trust obtained all necessary consents in 2003, with the frigate F69 being acquired for One Dollar from the RNZN, April 2005. Placement of the former HMNZS Wellington, onto the seabed off the south coast of Wellington, was completed successfully on the 13th November 2005.
Before F69 was commissioned HMNZS Wellington, F69 served the Royal Navy as HMS Bacchante.
Many ex-crew of HMS Bacchante were present for the sinking and/or visited her during the preparation of the ship while she was berthed outside Te Papa.
